The Worst Hard Time

When we got back home late Saturday night, our cable was off (the pitfalls of living in a rural neighborhood). While that bothered my husband, who'd wanted to watch the Olympics, I was happy just to read. Chris' uncle gave us a book called The Worst Hard Time, written by Timothy Egan. The tome details the dust bowl days of the 1930's. There are many books written about this time in American history but none that delve into WHY the dust bowl really happened, and how things turned around. The book follows a handful of people and families, predominantly in Dalhart, TX and Boise City, OK, with a few others in Shattuck, OK, Springfield, CO, and Inavale, NE.

I'm originally from the former dust belt area, and I had no idea how the dust bowl really came to be or that FDR played a role in ending it. It's a fascinating story that was told in a very heartfelt and smart way by author Egan. I highly recommend it if you're looking for a good read to while away these dog days of summer.

That sounds really interesting Sandra! And since you didn't give away why there were dust bowls, I have to go research now...or just find the book. :-)
