I Have Become My Mother-In-Law

You know how they say men marry women like their mothers? The older I get, the more like my mother-in-law I get.

My mother-in-law was the catalog queen. Years ago, my husband and I collected my in-laws' mail while they were out of town. One day, I opened their mailbox, and it was overflowing with catalogs. Seriously. I think the record for the most number of catalogs received was reached while we were collecting their mail. 22 catalogs. I'm not joking.

Today I went to our mailbox, and there were 9 catalogs. While that's a far cry from 22, I had to wonder how we got on so many mailing lists. I'm tall and tend to order most of my slacks online or from catalogs, so that accounts for some of the clothing catalogs. My daughter just turned 13, and she's still getting the Limited Too catalog.

But how did we get on the list for Bags and Bows? Or Acacia? Or even Bra Smythe?

Thankfully, one of today's catalogs was Soft Surroundings. I've mentioned that catalog before. They carry tall slacks and skirts, and I've ordered from them before. In addition to clothing, they also carry bedding and a few other things. If I had a lot of money, I'd buy a lot more from them. The whole catalog is full of eye candy.

The pic below is of their Belgique Tapestry collection. While the bedding is pretty, what caught my eye was how they used the gorgeous, antique, pine armoire as a headboard.
This pic shows another neat idea for a headboard.
Isn't this outfit cute?
I like this outfit, too.

One of today's catalogs was one I have not seen before, Barrie Pace. If you need a mother of the bride dress, I'll bet you could find one in this catalog.

Once I went online to copy some Barrie Pace photos, I noticed they have a connection to Austin Reed. No wonder their styles are so classic. I just love how BP has such chic styles with nods to the 40's or 50's.

So what are some of your favorite catalogs?

Girl, we are indeed kindred spirits! My catalog mail ordering started back in the 80's before the web! I, too am tall and could not find any jeans long enough, so I began ordering by mail. Because I live in a small town, there are very few places to shop; we are 45 mintues south of Dallas, so that's where everyone shops. Because of my responsibilities of taking care of my Dad, I can't easily get to Dallas. But thanks goodness for the internet, because I can (and do) order almost everything I need online. When we moved last year, I shopped online for my new sofa, wall art and rugs!
My motto is: If UPS can't deliver it, I don't need it!
I've never heard of some of the catalogs you mentioned, but you can bet that's where I'm headed now! Thanks for sharing...

I too, receive lots of catalogs. When we go away to the lake or anywhere else, for several days to a week or more, we always stop the mail and it gets a tad embarrassing when we pick up the mail at the post office! Jim always says something about all those lost trees.

My favorites are Pottery Barn, Wisteria, Ballards and Horchow, among others. I receive Soft Surroundings too. Even though I am a bit short and wide for most of the clothes, I love to look at what the catalog offers. Dillards used to put out a holiday catalog that was spectacular. I don't think they've done that in a couple of years.

I am a catalog queen, much to Jim's dismay!

Too funny, Sandra. Here I thought I got a lot of catalogs! This is actually one I haven't seen before, but I do love the headboards they used in those photos. So unusual. -Julia

I am a catalogue junkie too! I love to sit and pour through them, creating a massive wish list for things I'll never order. I agree wtih you, what a great way to get inspiration (that first headboard was beautiful!)
Right now, I am loving Garnet Hill and Boden.

My favorite way to shop is in my pajamas and with the phone and a catalog or at the computer. Soft Surroundings has beautiful clothes and household items, as does their store. I love their balloon bedskirts (the ones where the front fabric is a little longer and is gathered on to the back fabric, which is a little shorter, creating a poofy hem.

Thanks to the comments, I have a few more sources to check out.

stumbled across your blog doing some research for my company...we happen to be one that you mention. you receive all those catalogs because you are a shopper! we only send to people who have a history of buying with us or other catalogs. if you'd like to cut down on some that you receive, visit www.dmachoice.org and you can opt in or out of any catalogs that you choose. this is the ONLY site that most catalogs honor, because it is run by the Direct Marketing Association.
happy shopping!
