Out of the Closet

I have a confession. When I read about bloggers who are cleaning out closets and getting organized, I get very envious. I suppose I could clean out my own closets, but there's not much point.

While our Amarillo house had a much smaller footprint than our current home, what sold us on it was all the storage. The utility room was about 6'x 10'and had a whole wall of built-in shelving and cupboards. The master bedroom had two, large, walk-in closets. I miss all that storage.

Canyon Wren Cottage has woefully less storage than what we're used to. You've already seen the laundry area. That's a far cry from what we used to have. This home has just one walk-in closet in the master bedroom, and it's square. That's a problem, because the center of the space is completely wasted. It's also not that big. I can't tell you how many boxes are still packed away in the garage just because there's nowhere to put stuff. Thankfully, the master bedroom is large, and one of these days, we plan to build two walk-in closets and convert the current one to a walk-in linen and coat closet, accessible from the other side (the kids' hall).

Even though I don't have a great closet to organize yet, it's fun to look at inspiration photos.

As I was looking up closets, I recalled having seen Mariah Carey's mammoth closet on an episode of "Cribs" several years ago.She needs lots of space for her shoes.

Other celebs have extravagant closets, too. This one belongs to Paula Abdul.

This is Jewel's closet. It doesn't seem all that huge or fancy, does it?

We Texas gals need our blue jeans. Eva Longoria has many pairs and a great place to store them.

We don't have to be big stars to organize, though. Are you in the organizing mode, too?

Oh My - what would Imelda say !? I had to trade interesting space for closet space so I can't even pretend that any of those rooms are in my future....I have closet envy.

Wow! Some of those closets make me feel like I am doing good in the area of "simplifying" at least. :-)

Love an organized closet...no matter how big.

You'll get there Sandra! Me too!

I good closet is a necessity for me...not because I have that many clothes (my kids always say that Mommy prefers to buy furniture and paintings over clothes), but because the people who built my house had the wonderful idea to put in California closets, and now I am used to a well organized closet! In fact, the picture third from the top looks very similar to my closet, with the built in drawers, shelves for shoes and bags, multi-layer racks for hanging clothes. My closet is not huge, but good design trumps size@

Well, I have been organizing my closets, because I had too! They are sooooo tiny.....really tiny...and I had to toss some stuff. I can't imagine having closets as big as those!! Look at all of those shoes and jeans. Amazing!

My post today was about my need for organization, as well as other things. And of course, my closet begs for organization. These pics only inspire me to be rich and famous so that I can afford all that space! ~Mindy

I had big plans to reorganize the linen closet and my clothes closet over the last two weeks but decided to have a sinus infection and pink eye instead, so things are still a-jumble. But there is a three-day weekend this month and so the linen closet's days are numbered.....

Those starlet closets are to die for. Imagine having enough sunglasses that you need your own spinning display towers....

It's kind of pretty to see all those clothes lined up like that, especially the jeans. Think any of them dust those spaces themselves? :)

Great timely post Sandra! I'm just starting to "think" of closet space! I want the first picture! Now the big question-- a carpeted closet or wood? I can't decide! Help!

Good Grief! Most of those look like stores, not closets!! I have a tiny master bedroom closet, but then I also don't have all that much stuff. Not being from these here parts, I remember thinking that any walk in closet, no matter how tiny , was very glamorous and even sort of unnecessary, and was so impressed with my tiny closet when we bought the house! I have since "evolved" and admit, a slightlylarger, fancier closet would be lovely . . .but even MORE lovely, would be to own all those jeans and shoes!!!

Hi Sandra, I just found your blog through Joni's Cote de Texas link. What a fabulous blog you have! I love your writing style. I am on a mission to redo my master closet space and it seems so hard to take that first step! It would require me to clean it all out first, which is scary!

Who needs to come out of the closet when you have a closet like that! Hmmm, seems like mine needs a little work!

Does organizing your pantry and junk drawers count? I was in a super-duper organizing mood yesterday, but I still have far to go :)

Hello my name is Susan and I am a closet-aholic...or at least closet envy. Cleaning out closets in my tiny cottage is a must. If I don't go through my clothes twice a year everything is so jammed packed I can't see what I have. I take a pile to donate and it looks nice for a while until all my new purchases add up and I'm full again.

My boss built a Huge Closet for his wife out of a spare bedroom in their townhome. She had it fixed up very much like the Celebrity pictures. She even has a check out and check in sheet so that when her sisters come over to borrow all her gorgeous things she can keep track of them.

I'm with you, Sandra: GIVE ME STORAGE! Storage is really so much more important than square footage. But before long, your new home will be "brought up to Sandra speed" and you'll be able to clear out all the boxes.
