Yes, I think you can do those things! I know you can! I did a library bookcase with OLD pre-fab stuff that was falling apart, mouldings, and pine 1x4's. And making a wine bar serviette center out on an old dresser - genious!

We did the bookcases with a TV cabinet (with sliding doors) in between. Put crown molding top and bottom, cover strips in between and painted the whole thing glossy white matching the woodwork. Looks great and cost about $4,000 less than the one we saw in the store.
