I Can Do That!

I don't need any new projects right now, but that doesn't stop me from looking through magazines or catalogs and seeing things that I think I could make or do.

These are two of the most obvious choices, in my opinion, for pretty easy, DIY projects. Secondhand chests and dressers can be found at garage sales and through Craigslist.

Something like this could be made with prefab or stock bookcases and molding.

While this project would be hard on the neck, what a great look it would be for the right room. Just use prefinished, wood flooring, and you've got yourself a custom ceiling!

Black and white photography is all the rage right now. How easy it would be to display small photos with a wide, white mat and a simple, black frame. Several grouped together really makes a statement.

Given that today is Good Friday, I won't add the Friday Cocktail icon, but I will share a song.

I've mentioned before that I used to sing, including in a contemporary Christian group called Majesty in Tulsa, Oklahoma. One of the songs we'd sing this time was year was Twila Paris' "Lamb of God." To this day, it is one of my favorite Easter songs. Have a blessed weekend and Happy Easter.

Hooked on Michael Buble

The fact that I'm positively, completely and utterly hooked on Michael Buble isn't a new development. I'm trying to remember how I first found out about him. I think it was from a "60 Minutes" interview back around 2000. If I were a teenaged girl, I wouldn't have posters of Chase Crawford or Orlando Bloom on my walls. No.... Instead, there'd be my lipstick kisses all over Michael Buble's paper cheeks.

A little more than a year ago, I heard that Buble would be coming to Austin. Since my daughter likes him, too, I logged on and ordered concert tickets just as soon as they were available. As a music lover, it's not surprising that I've seen a lot of concerts and live performances. John Mayer, Rod Stewart, Billy Joel... They were all great in concert. But no one beats Michael Buble. Not only is he a great singer, he's really very entertaining, as well. If you like the standards -- heck, even if you don't -- you must arrange to get tickets if he comes to your city. You won't be disappointed.

Home of the Week -- Windsor Road

Sorry for my absence of late. Funny thing about blogging. Even for those of us who enjoy writing, connecting with others and sharing our hobbies and passions, it's easy to hit a road block with blogging. Other things in our lives can get in the way, too. When you have a full time job, a home and a family, well, a girl's gotta have priorities.

And today's priority is to get back on track with Canyon Wren Cottage and post this week's Home of the Week. (I'm renewing my commitment to Canyon Wren Cottage, and I thank you for your loyalty and friendship).

I've mentioned the old, monied area of Austin's Enfield before. While there are some beautiful neighborhoods around town, I think it's hard to beat the architecture and character of the old homes along Windsor Road.

Built in 1939, this home's traditional architecture encompasses a sizable 3678 square feet. The real estate listing says one can see the UT Tower, Texas State Capitol and downtown from this lot. It's hard to put a price on a view like that.

Now for the nitty gritty... The home boasts 3 bedrooms (though the real estate listing says the exercise room could be a 4th bedroom) and 5 baths. The price tag? $2,000,000.

Friday Cocktail

I don't know about you, but I'm so glad today's Friday. What a week! Central Texas is finally getting some much-needed moisture, but driving in it is not fun. In fact, I got rear-ended the other night on my way home from work. I'm fine, and, honestly, the car's fine too. I still have to hassle with getting it fixed and making arrangements for a rental car. Did I mention I'm glad today's Friday? How 'bout a cocktail?

Today's Friday Cocktail is a new song by a new artist. Erin McCarley is one of the hottest new artists around. Hailing from Garland, a Dallas suburb, she now lives in Nashville. I hope she comes to Austin soon. I'd love to see her in concert. Enjoy!

Has Ken Been Replaced By Jonathan Adler?

You may have heard the recent news that Jonathan Adler is moving up in the design world and is now designing for Barbie. From People.com:

What little girl didn’t dream of living in Barbie’s dream house as an adult? Our taste may have changed since we were little, but so has Barbie’s! The icon, who turns 50-years-old this year, is moving to Malibu and none other than Top Design judge Jonathan Adler is shaping the interiors. The interior design star will be updating Barbie’s bedroom, living room, and, of course, her drool-worthy closet, in an actual Malibu beach house, which will serve as the backdrop to the doll’s 50th blowout bash on March 9. And for those of us who still love playing house, Barbie and Adler will be launching a “Jonathan Adler Loves Barbie" collection in the fall of 2009, including designer pottery, pillows, decorative objects. Don’t forget the Jonanthan Adler-designed Barbie that comes with her own matching furniture!...

Barbie and her digs have received many makeovers through the years, and Jonathan Adler's may be the best yet. His designs really lend themselves to a bit of exaggeration and translate well to miniatures.

Home of the Week -- Foothills Terrace

Every now and then, I run across a home for sale that is such a gem. This week's home is one of those. From the bones of the home itself to the finishes and interior design -- pure eye candy.

Nestled on half an acre in the middle of west Austin yet very secluded, this Mediterrean home blends right in with its surroundings. It's unpretentious yet really gorgeous, inside and out. (as always, click on pics for larger views).

Did you notice the venetian plaster walls in the foyer? Gorgeous!

I was hoping the MLS listing would say what the kitchen island countertop is. It sort of looks like concrete, and with its mottled finish, it also resembles galvanized metal. I can't imagine a home like that having a metal counter in the kitchen, but this is Austin, and nothing should surprise us.

I love the master bedroom. While I'm a little over plates on the wall, the plate arrangement above the bed works. I really wish there were more pics of that room and that other bedrooms were shown, as well.

Here's the skinny on the house:

Five full baths and two half baths
Five living areas
Pool, spa and cabana

And it all can be yours for a cool $4.5 million. Or we can take a few notes and recreate the look for less in our own homes. :-)

Making the Case

I apologize for my absenteeism on my blog lately. I could give you a really good story as to why I haven't been around, but the honest truth is, I've become a Facebook junkie. In fact, if you're on Facebook and would like to be my FB friend, feel free to send me a friend request. If you're not on Facebook, I guarantee you, lots of your friends and former classmates are. And if you're afraid you'll become addicted to it as I have, it's only as addicting as you allow it to be. :-)

I have several things in store for the blog this spring, including a personal tour of the most expensive home on the Austin market. I think that post will be up right around the first part of April. If you're in the Austin area, or even if you aren't, and would like to have your own personal tour, there will be a high-end cocktail reception with all proceeds benefitting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. I'll keep you posted.

On to today's post... I see a lot of blog posts and magazine articles that feature items from Urban Outfitters. Until recently, I've never really looked that much at what they have to offer. One of the things that intrigues me is their line of decorated pillowcases.

I have an all-white bedroom. I love it, but every now and then, I contemplate injecting a little color or whimsy. The following pillowcases from Urban Outfitters might do just the trick. And they're only $24 a pair.

The Great Outdoors

As the weather warms up, most of us are spending more time outdoors. One of the things we loved about our house when we moved in a year ago was its large lot -- .60 acre. If there'd been much landscaping before, most of it had been removed before we bought the house. We were glad about that, because the only thing worse than putting in new landscaping is having to rip out the old stuff.

In our former home, we felt pretty confident about what plants would work well in that climate, and which ones absolutely would not thrive. Once we got to the Hill Country, we were excited to have more options. What we didn't realize was that the soil varies in different parts of the Hill Country. You can see gorgeous crape myrtles and other flowering plants and bushes in the cities of San Antonio and Austin. But once you get in the more rural areas, the landscape, though pretty, is a bit "scrubbier." Combine the scrub of our area with the extreme drought over the last year, and only those native plants and grasses are surviving right now.

We attempted to plant a few evergreens as foundation plantings last year, but once the drought hit, and water usage was restricted, most of those bushes didn't make it. We are realizing that xeriscaping is the way to go. Xeriscaping is landscaping with plants and grasses that do not require supplemental irrigation. Unfortunately, even xeriscaping requires a bit of water to get the tender vegetation going, and we're not allowed to do any outdoor watering with anything resembling a hose or faucet.

Until the water restrictions are lifted a bit, we're looking at putting in a bit of hardscaping. Hardscaping is masonry work, woodwork and other nonplant elements in a landscape.

You've seen photos of our media room, which started as an attached garage. When that garage was converted to a room, the previous owners built a detached garage with a limestone facade to match the house. The structure is about 10-15 feet from the side/back of the house. Possibly at that same time as well, the former patio was converted into a sun porch.

Now, we use the sun porch, but there are times when we'd like to hang out outside. What we'd like to do is create a walkway and stone patio, taking advantage of the back wall of the garage.

We'd like to create a separate patio space with a flagstone floor. Eventually, we'll build a pergola structure to cover the patio, but there's no rush to do that. You see the tree and its limestone planter. The tree will stay, and we're thinking it may have been planted in the planter as opposed to the planter being built around the tree, so while the planter will go, we may have to keep a smaller planter.

The stone floor will go from each corner of the garage and extend to the tree. You can't tell from the pics, but there's a slope between the house and the garage, so we'll create stone steps and a walkway for a seamless transition.

Eventually, we'd like to build an outdoor fireplace, but if we get impatient, we'll go with a stone firepit.

Hooked on Friday Cocktail

Since this is a Friday post, my friend, Julia, has Hooked on Fridays. What am I hooked on today? Well, I guess I'm hooked on the Friday Cocktail. Good friend, Amber, created the concept. She's taking a break from blogging, so I have her permission to continue the Friday Cocktail. I tried to turn it into a blog party last week. It was fun, but only two revelers showed up. Plus, I had a bit of an issue with Mr. Linky. I am only hooked on Mr. Linky when someone else uses him. :-)

So this week's Friday Cocktail is Loreena McKennitt. If you like Enya, you'll probably like McKennitt. Her voice is similar to Enya's, but her music sounds a bit more ethnic and incorporates more drums.

This song is called "The Mummer's Dance." I don't know what a mummer is, but not only do I love this music, I love the lyrics. Enjoy!

Home of the Week -- Westlake Contemporary

One of the neatest things about living in Austin is how artsy and unique the city is. Even some of the homeless have creative signs ("Will work for beer," etc.)

Austin can be an architect's paradise, because almost anything goes. Most people would think that philosphy is quite recent, but I suspect it's been around this funky city for a long time. This week's home is a pretty good indicator of how unique an architect might've been more than 30 years ago.

Situated on a wooded acre in the beautiful suburb of Westlake, the mls listing calls this home, built in 1978, a living sculpture. It is a stone and glass structure designed by John Watson, described in the real estate listing as a student of Frank Lloyd Wright.

The interior of the home kind of reminds me of the interior of the snail in the original "Dr. Doolittle" movie or a yurt. Outside, there's a pond, stream, waterfall and negative edge pool. Sadly, the photos aren't the best, but you can still get a great idea of the home and its surroundings.

In keeping with the uniqueness of the home, there is only one bedroom. Funny that the mls list touted the school district. It would be hard for a family with young children to share this house, in spite of its 2500 square feet. If you don't have to worry about accommodating children, this home can be yours for $1.5 million.

Hamptons Showhouse

If you were like me this past weekend, you watched "Something's Gotta Give" for the umpteenth time. I think it's a cute movie, and Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton give flawless performances. Plus, if you're into great interior design, you've gotta love the house.

I'm not quite sure how, but I stumbled upon a Hamptons showhouse from summer 2008. The exterior is quite reminiscent of the home in the movie. (The first photo is the SGG house. The following two are the Hamptons showhouse).

The showhouse has a handful of living and home office areas. If you think that's over the top, wait till you see the bedrooms.

Don't these stairs remind you of the living space in the SGG house?

Home of the Week

The Texas Hill Country encompasses a large geographical area. The largest cities in the Hill Country are San Antonio and Austin. Smaller communities include Wimberley, Fredericksburg, Comfort and others. Texas has many beautiful areas, but it's hard to beat the Hill Country, which is identified, of course, by its hilly terrain, and an abundance of live oak trees.

Today's home is new construction in Boerne, TX, which is a small town near San Antonio. With 4400 square feet, the home features stucco with rock accent exterior, and four bedrooms, each with their own baths. It's too bad there aren't more pictures of the interior. It looks like a fabulous home. And it can be yours for just $895,000.

Craigslist Finds

I have been laid up this weekend with a bum ankle and have spent way too much time on my computer. I mean, how often can a girl update her Facebook status? :-)

One of the things that helped pass the time was perusing Austin's Craigslist. I'm not in the market for anything specific right now, but it's fun to look. Here are some of the great deals I found...
Can you believe this West Elm dhurrie rug (8'x5') is just $40?
This patio set is just $95.
Need a new leather sofa? This one's just $500.
This whole bedroom set (full bed, dresser, chest & mirror) is just $215 -- a steal!

This Craigslist is selling her IKEA Ektorp loveseat for $120. An off-white slipcover is just $40 or so, which would make this a great CL find.
Here's an Ektorp leather sofa for just $300.

This dresser and mirror is just $75.

This style is hot, hot, hot right now, and it's just $150.

The listing calls this an armoire. It's 41" wide, and I'm thinking it'd be perfect for today's flat-screen TV's. In fact, this is one piece that I might be interested in myself.

Something about this antique trunk is intriguing to me. At $200, it's not a steal, but that's not outrageous, either.

I used to think it'd be fun to mosaic an antique mantel. This one's $175, which is a great deal, if you've ever priced them. That fireplace insert comes with it, though I wouldn't want it.

This sweet table is the best deal -- $50 or best offer. It is an antique game table. I sure wish I had room for something like that right now.

In the market for a full-size bed? This antique one is just $75.

This antique armoire needs a little work, but for just $50, that's totally worth it.

A Friday Cocktail & A Blog Party

Today's Friday cocktail is by Ari Hest. He's another singer we saw on The Rock Boat back in 2006. He has a voice as smooth as "buttuh" and the most gorgeous falsetto you'll probably ever hear. Why this guy hasn't made it big yet is beyond me. Maybe it's because he sounds a bit like Three Doors Down, and they beat him to the punch.

If you're an American Idol fan, you may remember this song sung by Jason Castro in 2007. Actually, there are several versions on YouTube, but I promise you, Ari's will give you goosebumps, especially when he starts in his falsetto. Enjoy!

My friend, Amber, is taking a well-deserved hiatus from her blog, Blue Mango. She's the one who started the Friday Cocktail. I want to preface today's post by apologizing for the size of the photos. They are from the realtor's site, and I just could not save them any bigger.

Hooked on Fridays and a Cocktail

As always, my friend, Julia over at Hooked on Houses, hosts "Hooked on Fridays," during which we can blog about whatever we're hooked on. For quite a while now, my family and I have been hooked on Coke Zero. If you want to give up sugary soft drinks but can't quite bring yourself to drink diet anything, you must check out Coke Zero. Admittedly, it's not exactly the same taste as Coca Cola Classic, but it's a pretty darn good facsimile.

And now for today's cocktail... Pat Green is an icon in Texas country music. Not only is he a great singer and songwriter, but he went to my alma mater, Texas Tech, so that's another plus for the guy. Oh, and I've met him, and he's super nice and very down to earth.

For the last few years, he's kind of wavered between Texas country and Nashville. Texas country music die-hards would call him a sell-out. I'm not a purist either way; I just like good music. Last summer, Pat came out with a song called "Let Me." It received modest airplay on mainstream country stations. I'm surprised it didn't do even better. Take a listen and see if you don't think this should've been a big hit for this nice Red Raider.

Home of the Week -- Gaston Ave.

When I ran across this home, I was convinced that it was built sometime in the 90's. The style is overwhelming French country with lots of wallpaper. Now, I'm not a wallpaper bigot. In fact, I quite like wallpaper, but this house has it in nearly every room. I was very surprised to see that the home was built just last year.

I can't decide if this home was built for a young family or an older couple. Some of the details in the kitchen are throwing me off. I hate the designs on the front of the farmhouse sink, and I'm not a big fan of the elaborate fruit/vegetable tiles on the backsplash, the mantel scarf or all those figurines above the TV in the living room.

The home has a lot of architectural detail that is especially apparent in the master bedroom. Take a look at that ceiling! With a little more attention to detail and the addition of more furniture and accessories, this home could be a real showplace.

The home has just over 3,900 square feet with four bedrooms, four baths, two living areas, and two dining areas. It also has a carriage house, which is where that small kitchen would be. This home can be yours for $2.2 million.

Hooked on Fridays and a Cocktail

My friend, Julia, over at Hooked on Houses hosts Hooked on Fridays during which we can blog about whatever we're hooked on. I'm hooked on music. I grew up singing, and as a Texan, my dream was to be a country singer though I had an appreciation for almost all genres of music. I loved Olivia Newton-John, Rita Coolidge and Tanya Tucker.

Once I got to college, I sang in a contemporary Christian group with two other co-eds. We probably could've made a career out of our music if life hadn't intervened. After college, I continued to sing in weddings and church and wherever anyone would have me. As I got older, more life intervened, I had a family and delved more into my career as a nonprofit professional. I sang less and less, but music was, and still is, very much a part of my life.

Not only do I listen to music all the time in my car, but I also have a little radio at work that is always on with the volume down low. At home, if we're not on the sunporch playing gin and listening to the stereo, the TV's set on the adult alternative station on Music Choice.

I first learned about Marc Broussard in 2005. It was the night Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. I was so anxious about what was going to happen, I couldn't sleep. As I was channel-surfing, I landed on Vh1 where a new singer's video was just coming on. Marc Broussard is from a small town outside New Orleans. The song is called, "Home." Listen to the words and then think about New Orleans getting hammered by Hurricane Katrina. Pretty powerful.

Since then, I've seen Broussard perform on The Rock Boat and at Antone's, here in Austin. He puts on one of the best live shows I've ever seen, and I highly recommend you check him out if he comes to your city.

Home of the Week -- Medway Ranch

As far as I'm concerned, the best place to live in the Texas Hill Country is close enough to the city (San Antonio or Austin) to enjoy urban amenities and far enough away to savor a little piece of Heaven. Our home sits on .60 acre, so that works for us. Some people, however, prefer a larger spread.

This week's home anchors a sprawling Texas Hill Country ranch just outside Austin. The bones of the main house are amazing. Just imagine what Brooke or Joni could do with the decorating.

The main house has 5,828 square feet with three bedrooms, two full baths, two half baths, a living room, formal study, office, and studio. The guest quarters are above the barn and include two bedrooms, one bathroom, and one living area. Oh, there's a pool cabana, too. That space has a living area, bar & kitchenette and full bath. If you have to ask how much, you probably can't afford it. Honestly, the real estate listing says, "Price Upon Request." Needless to say, I won't be requesting.

When Decorating Gives You Lemons

You've seen photos of the room that was formerly our attached garage. It was converted to a room some years ago, but there were some very "garagy" things about it that didn't make the conversion. One of those things was the heater/hot water heater closet. I'm sure it was fine when the space was a garage, but it was a real eyesore as far as rooms go.

We couldn't exactly move the heater and hot water heater, so we did the next best thing. We turned the door into a chalkboard. One of these days, I may change out the molding for something more elaborate, and I'll gild it to make a real statement. In the meantime, I just painted the trim molding to match the walls. See the doorknob? I didn't think so. It's painted black to blend in with the chalkboard.

Brooke is an extraordinarily talented, California designer, and though she hasn't been blogging long, it's obvious she's not a novice at decorating. Not only are her designs to die for, but when you read her blog, you get two for one as her hubby, Steve, is a talented architect.

Design Blog Profile #4

One of the problems I have in decorating my own home is my decorating ADD. I like color, and then I like whites and creams. I like French country, and cottage style, and traditional decor, and vintage. It's so hard to whittle down exactly what I want. I guess that's why I enjoy looking at design blogs and seeing decor I will probably never have in my own home. One of my favorite design blogs to get lost in is Country French Antiques, by blog-friend, Shawn.

Shawn has a lovely antiques shop in Louisville, KY, and she keeps her readers updated on the store through her blog. Beyond that, Shawn has a deep appreciation for everything French, and her posts will take you back in time and place. She's a very talented writer and designer, and I hope you enjoy her blog as much as I do.

A lot of you are familiar with today's design blogger even if you may not know he has a blog. Eddie Ross was a contestant on Top Design, and if you followed the show, you may agree with me that he should've been among the finalists.

Eddie's blog, Eddie Ross, is a wonderful smorgasbord of design how-to, decorating with antiques and thrift store finds and making the most out of what you have. He also shops a mean streak and sets a beautiful table.

The following three photos are from a spread on Eddie and his apartment featured in Domino magazine a few months ago.

I've mentioned this before, but not only is Eddie talented and happy to share his talents through his blog, but if you leave a comment, he's sure to email a personal response.

Design Blog Profile -- Monday

As I mentioned, with the demise of so many design magazines lately, I would imagine most people are like me and getting their eye candy and design tips from other bloggers. I've decided to take this week to profile five design blogs that are my "go-to" places for inspiration or advice.

I was torn between putting my favorite design blog first or saving it for last. I've decided to put it first, mostly because it was really the first design blog I started visiting on a regular basis.

A lot of bloggers, including me, are bloggers who happen to enjoy decorating. Joni, of Cote de Texas, is a designer who blogs. Her blog is full of eye candy. If you need nothing more than a little inspiration, Cote de Texas is a great place to visit.

I love her French country style, which is the perfect blend of rusticity and formality. I could move into her house and feel right at home.

If you're willing to spend a little more time, however, Joni will teach you the basics of design, as well as the intricacies. Seriously.

Joni's posts are thoughtful, thorough, educational and entertaining. If you like the "Something's Gotta Give" house, there are several posts on Cote de Texas that will walk you through the design specifics.

If you want to know about the latest trends, Round Top Antiques Fair, the latest popular designers or where to the get the look for less, you will find it at Cote de Texas. While Joni has done the legwork for you, be prepared to spend some time. You won't want to miss a single post. As design magazines fall by the wayside, make Cote de Texas part of your design food. You won't be disappointed.

I met Sharon at Serendipty over the internet, nearly as long ago as Amber. Sharon is a wonderful decorator with a talent for sewing. Well that, and you can see her talent with my new blog header. She bought a fixer-upper cottage, and you should see all the progress she's made so far.

Finally, Katie, at Making this Home, is a new blogger friend whose blog profiles this young American couple's life in Germany. She and her husband have maximized the space in their kitchen, and they strive to live green every day.

Saturday Catch-Up

I've been asked about the vinyl floors in our living room. The brand is Cryntel, which is made by and sold at Lowe's. Sadly, it has been discontinued in spite of its popularity.

There are other brands out there, and the price range is as varied as other types of flooring. I did a lot of research before purchasing the Cryntel, and what I learned is if you have a cement slab, you're better off going with a self-stick tile that adheres directly to the slab. If you have a pier and beam foundation, Home Depot sells a line of planks that adhere to each other and not to the floor underneath. Homeowners with slabs were not always pleased with the result if they'd installed that type of tile and vice versa.

I've also been asked about the rug in the living room. It is an indoor/outdoor, sisal-look rug purchased on clearance from Ballard's. We love it. If you have kids and pets, it's immensely more practical than a natural rug, and it looks like the real thing.

My friend, Penny, from the Comforts of Home has asked about the hatch green chili burgers at Shady Grove. Hatch chilies are grown only in/near Hatch, NM. They are harvested in late summer and slow roasted to reach a subtle flavor with a slight tang and a bit of a bite. They make nearly everything taste better.

Have you noticed my new header? My good friend, Sharon, over at Serendipity is considering getting into the biz of blog design, and Canyon Wren Cottage is her first guinea pig. Hooked On Fridays and a Cocktail

My friend, Julia, is hosting a "Hooked On Fridays" party, which means we can just blog about whatever we're hooked on. I figured this would be a good excuse to promote one of my favorite Austin restaurants.

There's a road in south Austin called Barton Springs Road, and there's a stretch along that road with some great and somewhat historical eateries. My favorite is Shady Grove.

Shady Grove opened in 1992, but the building appears to be older than that. While the stone facade is intriguing, of the many times I've eaten there, I have never sat inside.
The patio, featuring a flagstone floor and outdoor bar, is HUGE. The centerpiece of the space is the very old and large live oak tree. Campy Christmas lights string out from the tree in a hub and spoke fashion, so the outdoor atmosphere is great during the day and fun and festive at night.

As for the food, we like the hatch green chili burgers. Yum!

Now on to today's Friday cocktail...

I first heard this Austin-based band, nelo, perform on a local morning news show last summer. If you like bands like Sister Hazel and Hootie and the Blowfish, you'll like nelo (rhymes with yellow). Enjoy and Happy Friday!

Before and After Party

My friend, Rhoda over at Southern Hospitality, is having a blog party featuring great before and after projects of 2008. We're still working on our media room, so that one will have to be a 2009 after. The best thing we did in 2008 was replace the flooring in our living room...

What's even better about this before and after project is that the flooring looks like hand-scraped wood planks, but it's actually vinyl. It was also a snap to install. If you would like real wood floors but don't want the expense of them, or if you have pets like I do, vinyl has come a long way, baby.

Out of the Closet

I have a confession. When I read about bloggers who are cleaning out closets and getting organized, I get very envious. I suppose I could clean out my own closets, but there's not much point.

While our Amarillo house had a much smaller footprint than our current home, what sold us on it was all the storage. The utility room was about 6'x 10'and had a whole wall of built-in shelving and cupboards. The master bedroom had two, large, walk-in closets. I miss all that storage.

Canyon Wren Cottage has woefully less storage than what we're used to. You've already seen the laundry area. That's a far cry from what we used to have. This home has just one walk-in closet in the master bedroom, and it's square. That's a problem, because the center of the space is completely wasted. It's also not that big. I can't tell you how many boxes are still packed away in the garage just because there's nowhere to put stuff. Thankfully, the master bedroom is large, and one of these days, we plan to build two walk-in closets and convert the current one to a walk-in linen and coat closet, accessible from the other side (the kids' hall).

Even though I don't have a great closet to organize yet, it's fun to look at inspiration photos.

As I was looking up closets, I recalled having seen Mariah Carey's mammoth closet on an episode of "Cribs" several years ago.She needs lots of space for her shoes.

Other celebs have extravagant closets, too. This one belongs to Paula Abdul.

This is Jewel's closet. It doesn't seem all that huge or fancy, does it?

We Texas gals need our blue jeans. Eva Longoria has many pairs and a great place to store them.

We don't have to be big stars to organize, though. Are you in the organizing mode, too?

Friday Cocktail

As I've mentioned, my good friend, Amber, at Blue Mango has been hosting Friday cocktails that feature videos of great singers and musicians. I love that idea. To kick off the new year, she's created a button and is spreading the word around blogland.

This week's Friday cocktail at Canyon Wren Cottage is showcasing two of my favorite singers. I first learned about Marc Broussard when I saw his "Home" video in the middle of the night as Hurricane Katrina was slamming the Gulf Coast. It was a moving video, especially considering Broussard is from a small town not too far from New Orleans.

I've had the opportunity to see him in person, first on the Rock Boat, and then in Austin this past year. He puts on an energetic and entertaining show.

As I was looking through his Youtube videos, I saw that he has a few duets with Sara Bareilles. No doubt you've heard her popular song, "Love Song," but if you haven't heard her entire CD, you've been missing out.

Happy 2009, friends! Thank you for your support and friendship this past year. I started Canyon Wren Cottage late last spring, but I didn't get really serious about blogging till July or so. Since then, I've met so many wonderful bloggers and made lots of new friends. Your comments warm my heart, and I've enjoyed getting to know you all.

This new year will feature even more open houses of gorgeous hill country real estate. In fact, I'm meeting with a realtor next week, who's listed a multi-million dollar home in the area. She wants to know if I will help her get the word out about the home, as well as raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Um... Yeah!

This new year will also feature more projects around my own home. It will be the year we finish the media room redo, because once the entertainment center cabs are finished, we still need to address the laundry area, purchase seating and do something about the floor.

We will also be addressing our storage issues. It's a little frustrating to have lived in our home a year and not feel completely settled, but I realize that sometimes you have to live in a space to figure out how best to make it work for you.

Finally, a couple of dear blogger friends are featuring giveaways on their own blogs. Linda, at Lime in the Coconut, is featuring a fun giveaway in which the winner gets to choose the prize.

Please Pass the Popcorn

After living in a fairly small home for so long, I really learned what it took to maximize a room's functions. For instance, our former study also served as a sitting room and music room, in addition to hosting a separate dining space when we entertained many people.

Few of us are fortunate enough, however, to have space designated solely as a home theater. Still, I thought it'd be fun to post a few inspiration pics.

That first photo is from the Elk Springs Lodge and Resort in Gatlinburg, TN. Isn't it fun?

All of the rooms above are much more elaborate than our media room will be. That's partly due to our limited budget and also to the multitude of uses our room must perform. I mean, seriously. As pretty as a coffered ceiling would be, I can't see it working for us with that exposed laundry area.

Before, During, And...

I've blogged about our media room, but it's been awhile. First a bit of history. We moved into our house, built in the mid-80's, exactly a year ago. The house has about 2600 square feet and sits on a lot slightly larger than half an acre. We really do feel like we have a little slice of the Texas hill country.

We were drawn to the house for several reasons. We loved the spacious living room and kitchen and the flow between the two rooms. Also, the house had been completely redone by the former owner, so it was nice to move in and not feel like we had to start redoing anything right away. We didn't love everything about the house, though.

One of the things that almost deterred us from buying the home was the garage conversion. On the outside, the conversion is seamless. Pulling up to the side of the house, no one would ever know where a garage door once existed.

Inside, the former garage housed the washer and dryer, and when the garage was converted into a room, the washer and dryer hook-ups stayed. The little concrete lip that all garages have was also left as it was. Those two features made the room very awkward and not completely functional as a media room, which is what we had decided to do with the space. This photo shows the east wall with the washer/dryer area. The hot water heater is in the little closet on the adjacent wall on the far right of the photo, and the door just to the left of that leads to our kitchen.

The previous owner installed new carpeting in the room, and while the carpet was new and pretty, it was not practical in a room with so much water. In fact, we had washer problems and flooding shortly after moving into the home.

Over the past year, we've been making a few changes to the room. In order to camouflage the concrete "lip," my handy husband installed 15' of unfinished, stock cabinets.

We are in the process of painting the walls, installing the countertop, and building shelving to sit on top of the cabinets. We removed the carpeting and simply painted the concrete floor. We are considering installing self-stick vinyl tile, but there are some concrete repairs to be done first. I'll show you more pics as we make a little more progress. We're hoping to have most of the work done by the end of next weekend. Once the room is finished, we'd like to get a roomy, yet space-saving sectional sofa. What do you think? Are we on the right track?

Somewhere Over the Rainbow

I mentioned in my last post that good friend, Amber, has started a new feature on her blog, Blue Mango, called Friday Cocktails, where she posts videos of various singers. I love that idea, so this week I'm posting a Friday cocktail at Canyon Wren Cottage.

Also in my last post, I introduced you to one of my favorite singers, Jane Monheit. I first found her when I was doing some research on singers at Amazon.com. You know how you can look something up, and there's that blurb that suggests you might be interested in similar singers? I think that's how I first found Jane Monheit.

She was just getting started back when I stumbled upon her music. My daughter, Cameron, loves her as much as I do. We had the pleasure of meeting Jane Monheit when she came to Amarillo to perform at a benefit gala for the local theater. She signed one of our CD's for Cameron and was very sweet to discuss the "biz" with our daughter, who aspires to sing professionally.

"Somewhere Over the Rainbow" has been sung for decades by so many singers, but hardly ever will you hear a version that is so heartfelt as Jane performs it. She really just melts into the music. Enjoy!

Christmas Memories

This time of year is always a great time to reflect on favorite holiday memories, and I thought it might be fun to share one or two of mine.

I spent the first two years of college at North Texas State University (now know as University of North Texas). I was six hours from home, and when I wasn't in class, I was working at the TG&Y near campus.

It was the end of 1981, and Neil Diamond was coming to Reunion Arena in Dallas. I had a date to the concert, so I figured I'd spend the money I'd have used for tickets on a tree. Before I had a chance to get the tree, my date informed me he had to work the night of the concert and had sold his tickets to recoup his costs. (We were college kids; what do you expect?)

My roommate, Nickita, liked Neil Diamond as much as I did, so we managed to purchase a couple of tickets, but I had to spend my "tree" money to get them. It was worth the trade-off, but as Christmas approached, the desire for a tree grew stronger.

I was due to drive back home on Christmas Eve, but on December 23rd, TG&Y put all their Christmas decorations on clearance. An artificial 6' tree was just $13.88. Even a poor college student could afford that. Unfortunately, there weren't many ornaments available, so I went next door to Rite-Aid to purchase a few boxes of simple Christmas balls. A few strands of silver tinsel and stringy, silver icicles helped fill out the tree.

I've upgraded to bigger and better trees and ornaments, but I have such fond memories of that simple tree, which was erected every Christmas for at least 15 years. And I may still have a box of ornaments with a Rite-Aid sticker on it.

Another favorite Christmas memory was shortly after my husband and I moved to Tulsa. It was 1985, and Christmas fell in the middle of the week. I had the whole week off, but Chris only had a couple of days off -- not enough time to get back to Texas to visit family. The weekend before Christmas, I flew to San Antonio, where my parents had moved while I was in college, and my flight back to Tulsa was late Christmas afternoon.

One of the gifts my parents gave us was a blue Playmate cooler in the box. Now, our family eats Christmas dinner around 1:00 in the afternoon, so after we ate, my mother packaged up leftovers and put them in the cooler, along with one of those frozen thingies to keep the food cold. Then we re-boxed the cooler, taped it up, and I checked it as baggage on the flight home.

That evening, Chris and I had a lovely Christmas dinner, just the two of us, courtesy of my sweet mother and that Playmate cooler.

Christmas treats

If you're going to blow your diet over Christmas, you might as well make it worth your while. I thought I'd share with you some of the treat recipes my family likes, as well as one that I would like to try soon. (Note: I am posting recipes from memory in front of me, so if you're curious about actual weights and sizes of items from the store, feel free to Google for more specific details and recipes).

One of our favorites is a Rice Krispie recipe with peanut butter and chocolate. I think some people may call them "O'Henry Bars," but we've never really had a name for them.

Recipe
1 C granulated sugar
1 C white Karo syrup
1 C peanut butter
6 C Rice Krispies
2 bags milk chocolate chips (or 12 Hershey's chocolate bars)

Heat sugar and Karo just till bubbling. Remove from heat and stir in peanut butter. Once peanut butter mixture is blended, add Rice Krispies and mix well. Spread into greased 9x13 pan. Melt chocolate and spread on top of Rice Krispie layer. Once the treats set up, cut into bars.

Do you like Butterfingers? I sure do. I don't remember where I got this recipe, but if you like Butterfingers, you must try these. (If you have a child or grandchild, have him/her help you out with these).

Cheese Nip Butterfingers
1 box small Cheese Nips
Peanut butter
1 package milk chocolate almond bark

Make little sandwiches with two Cheese Nips and peanut butter. Keep making these till you're out of crackers. Melt almond bark over stove. Add crackers and coat thoroughly. Let set on wax paper.

When my son was little, he was really into cowboys. I'd make what are traditionally known as "Haystacks," but we called them "Tumbleweeds."

Recipe
1 bag butterscotch chips
1 can chow mein noodles

Melt chips over low heat. Once melted, add noodles and stir well. Once noodles are coated thoroughly, spoon out balls onto wax paper and let set.

There are variations to this recipe that call for adding peanut butter, marshmallows, nuts, etc.

Just as I like the juxtaposition of rustic and refined in my decorating, I like the contrast between sweet and salty, such as white chocolate-covered pretzels.

Recipe
1 package white almond bark
1 bag small pretzels

Melt almond bark over low heat. Once melted, add pretzels and stir well. Once pretzels are coated thoroughly, set out onto wax paper. (This recipe can be varied with milk chocolate and straight pretzels. I've also used the big, straight pretzels and added sprinkles before the chocolate sets).

Finally, my husband tried these the other day at his office. I've never made them, but since he sent me the recipe, I think that's his hint for me to whip some up.

Ritz Toffee Bitz
Recipe
1 package Skor or Heath toffee bits
1 box Ritz crackers
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 C chopped pecans (optional)

Crush Ritz into fine crumbs and put in mixing bowl. Add 3/4 of the toffee bits package, 3/4 of the pecans and all the condensed milk. Stir well and put into greased 9x9 dish. Sprinkle remaining toffee bits and pecans on top and cook in 350 oven for 8 mins. Cool completely before cutting into squares. A variation has a 1/4cup of milk chocolate chips on the bottom of the pan before adding the mixture and then another 1/4 cup of milk chocolate chips to the top before baking.

Christmas in Amarillo

Welcome to my Amarillo house. Enjoy some hot chocolate chip cookies, and be sure and take advantage of the coffee bar.

The colors in my Amarillo house were predominantly red, gold, mossy green and a little blue. That color scheme made decorating for Christmas easy and fun.

I've mentioned before that the house had a fairly small footprint, so we had a skinny tree. I always placed most focus on the tree, and if I had time and energy to decorate beyond that, I would.

The next focus would be on the mantel. Interspersed amongst the garland were simple, silver ornaments. At each end were small hurricanes with cranberries and candles.

I used to have a Christmas magazine article that showed Santa plates hung on the kitchen cabinets. I found these Fitz & Floyd plates at Stein Mart. The concept wasn't ultra-practical, but I liked the whimsy they brought into my red kitchen.

I think it was that same article that showed pepperberry wreaths hung on doors throughout the home. This door leads to my former butler's pantry/utility room. Of all the rooms in my Amarillo house, I miss this one and its storage the most.

Finally, atop this old piano, which I painted (what a before and after that project was), were handmade, Simpitch carolers inherited from my husband's mother. Aren't they wonderful?

While you're here, I'll tell you about the coffee bar. I've mentioned before that while our Amarillo house was a bit space-challenged, it didn't keep us from entertaining. When we did entertain, we stuck with appetizers and drinks or desserts and coffee. I'd set up a couple of carafes of coffee on our breakfast bar, which was adjacent to the living room. Along with the coffee were coffee syrups, cinnamon, sugar, cream, etc., all diplayed in vintage pieces. I'd also put out a pretty bowl of whipped topping. The whole set-up made for a lovely display that was always a favorite of our guests. (Try the whipped topping with your coffee, and sprinkle a little cinnamon on top. Yum!)

I hope you've enjoyed the visit. I'll try to post some pics of this year's decor, if I can figure out how to make the silver and white show up against the white, limestone backdrop. A Parent's Worst Nightmare

Our little town had a Christmas festival this weekend. I dropped off my 13-year-old daughter earlier this afternoon, so she could hang out with her friends. My 17-year-old son, Cale, would be going to the festival a little later with two of his buddies.

I went to pick up my daughter and was on the way home when I saw a familiar car embedded in an embankment on the side of the road. I realized it was my son's car when I saw three boys surveying the damage and noticed my son's jacket. I was the second person on the scene; the first was a sheriff's deputy.

Now, to set up the scenario a little, we live in a rural subdivision a few miles outside of town, and all the roads in the area are two-lane and a bit hilly and curvy. Cale and his friends were on their way to the festival when he decided to close the sun roof. As he took his eyes off the road, the car veered into some gravel on the right. Cale over-corrected, crossed lanes and ended up facing 180 degrees around in an embankment on the other side of the road. Thankfully, there were no other cars involved, and Cale and his friends are all fine.

The car was towed to a body shop, and we should have an estimate of the damage in the next couple of days. It is an older car, and though the damage doesn't look extensive, it wouldn't take much for it to be totalled. Either way, it'll be at our expense, as we only carried liability on it.

I've heard those horror stories of parents coming upon an accident to find their own kids seriously injured or worse. I'm so thankful this wasn't one of those scenarios.

I'll get back to Christmas decorating tomorrow, and we'll take a look at some mantels. Until then, we're relishing some family time, watching "Home Alone."

Hypothetically Speaking...

If I were to change out my traditional blue, gold and green Christmas decorating to silver and white, mercury glass would have to figure into the scheme somewhere, somehow.

And while we're at it, how about a few more silver inspirations?

Finally, one of our cute, local stores, The Looking Glass, has some pretty, silver, jewel-encrusted trees. I think these would be fun to make with my daughter.

I noticed Lowe's has their Christmas trees at 50% off. That'd make getting a new, fatter one pretty affordable, especially if I did change out my Christmas decorating. Hypothetically speaking, of course.

White Christmas

As with the white pumpkins, I have a hankerin' for all things white when it comes to Christmas decorating. I can't do it this year, because that'd mean all new ornaments, but perhaps one day...

Okay, so I threw in a little blue for good measure. That's pretty, too, isn't it? If you haven't seen Pat's tree (Back Porch Musings), you need to. She's incorporated blue into her Christmas decorating in such beautiful ways.

It's All About the Tree

Our last house had just under 1800 square feet, but it had tons of storage, which translates into a shortage of living space. Honestly, that's the way I'd prefer it, except we like to entertain. We made it work, though, and managed to do a lot of great entertaining in that house.

One of the ways we made the living room work at Christmas was to use a slim, pre-lit tree. It was ideal for the space, and placing it behind the sofa made it the first thing one would see arriving through the front door. We also put nearly all the Christmas decorating focus on the tree.

Now that we have space to spread out, I'd like a big, fat, pre-lit tree but don't want to shell out a lot of money in this economy. I may have to make the skinny tree work this year, and that's okay.

In the past, I've decorated our main tree with lots of shiny, glittery ornaments and beaded garland with the idea that I wanted it to look like it was dripping with jewelry. If we had lots of money and no pets, I'd love a tree covered in Christopher Radko ornaments. I still love that look, but when I look at different options, I get Christmas decorating ADD. Take a look, and see what I mean. I love them all!

Heartbroken

This is today's post. There will be no pictures, no decorating and no cooking. I have been a nonprofit professional for most of my career, and I love it. I believe that God put us on this earth to use our strengths and talents to help people. My strengths are in public relations, marketing and fund raising, and I use them for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Cystic fibrosis is a life threatening, genetic disease that affects the respiratory system, as well as the digestive system. The CF Foundation has made tremendous progress with wonderful drugs and treatments to help kids and young adults live longer, healthier lives. Parents who had babies with CF in the early 80's were told their babies might not make it to college. Now many of those same kids are in the early 20's and doing pretty well.

Unfortunately, there are still too many kids and young adults, who succumb to CF, and I hate it. One of our CF patients, a 15-year-old girl, passed away yesterday. To make things even worse, her older sister also has CF, and she's currently in the hospital with an infection and fever. I am beyond heartbroken about this today.

I won't use my blog to solicit for the CF Foundation, other than to say if you ever need a cause to contribute to or volunteer for, you can't go wrong with the CF Foundation.

Tomorrow's post will be about my Thanksgiving tablescape and menu. But for today, I'm going to hug my kids a little tighter and be thankful for my blessings.

I Can Do That!

Do you ever browse through catalogs, see great things and think they'd be easy to replicate? I do that all the time. That's why my last garage was so full of future projects. I'm determined to keep this garage less cluttered, but I still get inspired.

I need a piece of art over the fireplace; I just don't know what I want. I do like this piece from Pottery Barn. It's 50" square and costs $399. I'm inclined to buy a piece of plywood, some lathing strips, and a few cans of wood stain. I'm thinking it'd cost about $50 to make this myself.

I've posted this one before, but it just looks so easy to make, in spite of the geometry required. Ballard Designs no longer carries it, so I'm not sure of the price. I see mirrored closet doors for sale all the time on Craigslist. You could buy one for $10-15, and then purchase that stick-on leading stuff from the craft store. I'll bet this could be made for less than $30!

Then there are those expensive desk accessories that are so popular right now. The following ones are from Pottery Barn. Lots of times, you can get free, cheapy chests and nightstands from Craigslist. The following organizer could be made out of a drawer.

I think you could make the following two items out of jewelry boxes. I'll bet you could get them inexpensively at thrift stores.

Bulletin boards can be purchased inexpensively at WalMart. This one's covered in linen. It looks very chic, doesn't it?

Finally, though I've tried to stay away from posting anything Christmas till after Thanksgiving, I do think these pillows would be pretty easy to replicate. WalMart has solid pillows for about $7. Use fusible tape or fabric glue to adhere metallic ribbon to pillow. Surely that'd be cheaper than the $34 price at Pottery Barn.

Color Me Neutral

I like color. I enjoyed decorating my last house in shades of red, mossy green and gold. Like most of the Austin area houses I post pictures of, however, my own Hill Country home seems to beg for warm neutrals. I found this feature in Traditional Home magazine and love all the neutrals.

As with the Comfort house, this house has wonderful buttery yellow cabinets in its galley kitchen. I'm so ready to paint my kitchen cabinets. I don't think I'll paint them buttery yellow, but they'll definitely be lighter than they are now.

Shhhh. Here it? That's the sound of my kitchen cabinets begging for a fresh coat of paint.

Come With Me to Comfort

A lot of people come to the Texas Hill Country specifically to shop for antiques, and they usually go to Fredericksburg, which I've blogged about before. Fredericksburg is a great town, but my favorite Hill Country antique spot is Comfort, about 30 miles W. of Fredericksburg.

One of the best antique shops in Comfort is at Comfort Commons, also a bed and breakfast owned by designers, Jim Lord and Bobby Dent. These two talented men have decorated quite a few Hill Country homes and getaways, and several of those spaces have been featured in magazines and on HGTV over the years.

I was happy to find the following article and photos from Country Living. The bed-and-breakfast was built late in the 1800s, long before the days of central air-conditioning. To combat heat and humidity, renowned architect Alfred Giles (1853-1920) devised double porches in front and back, as well as 20-inch-thick limestone walls. It is precisely these attributes that attracted Jim and Bobby to the former hotel when they spotted it in 1990. "The porches seemed to go on for miles," Jim recalls. Though structurally sound, the interior had been "patched and repatched" over the years. To return it to its earlier grandeur, original details were restored or replaced.

The homeowners' penchant for the warm colors and worn surfaces of painted furniture is evident in the dining room, where c. 1870 Georgia ladder-back chairs with cowhide seats surround an 1880s scrub-top pine table. A pair of 1850s Windsor arrow-back chairs anchor either end of the table.

I love the buttery yellow kitchen cabinets and beadboard ceiling. Even though the granite countertop is a contemporary touch, it doesn't take away from the vintage look and feel of the rest of the kitchen.

I also love this chippy, yellow vitrine.

Have you ever seen such an extensive ironstone pitcher collection? Lord and Dent have displayed it so effectively, too.

Home of the Week -- Mount Bonnell

The home of Lance Armstrong, Austin is known for having a variety of outdoor activities. The city is full of cycling, running, kayaking, and canoeing activities, among others. A favorite place for hiking and enjoying the sites is Mount Bonnell.

Not only is Mount Bonnell an outdoorsy site, it's close to Balcones Drive, the street about which I blogged a few weeks ago, and there are houses along Mount Bonnell Road, too. This week's home is one of those along Mount Bonnell Rd.

At just under 6,000 square feet, this estate features five bedrooms, five full baths, two half baths, two living areas, and two dining areas. It sits on a gated lot and offers views of the Texas Hill Country and beautiful Lake Austin.

While I won't say who lives in this house, I did find an interesting article about the couple and the amazing pool they had built after they moved in. The article, believe it or not, appeared in the New York Times back in August, 2007:

Not all over-the-top pool owners, though, set out to build showpieces. When J. and B. M. bought their 5,800-square-foot house outside Austin, Tex., two years ago they planned only to remodel the existing pool. But they were persuaded to go further by their designer, Brent Mowry of Mowry Pools in Austin.

When Mr. M. saw the house for the first time, he said, it was essentially a tear-down. “But when I walked out onto that deck, I thought, ‘Damn, this is a million-dollar view and I need a pool that can keep up.’ ”

The M's ended up spending what they said was a significant chunk of their overall renovation budget — which was a million dollars, as it happens — on a two-story pool connected by a slide and a recirculating waterfall with sweeping staircases on either side. The lines of the pools — the bottom one is 320 square feet and the top one 450 — mimic the shoreline of Lake Austin below. At night, they glow in one or more of the lighting system’s 24 programmable colors.

Mr. M. is somewhat reticent about the interest the pool has attracted from neighbors and others, although he admits it’s been a subject of conversation. “We really wanted a place to hang out with the family, which we got,” he said, along with “something that truly adds to the value of the home.”

His wife, a stay-at-home mother, was more forthcoming. “We got a lot of local publicity about the house and the pool and it was in the local parade of homes,” she said. “I think about 600 people came through to take a look. We can see people driving slow by the house and I know they’re just dying to get in to see both the house and the pool. This is the first summer since the completion so it’s been quite the happening spot.”

“At first it made me nervous — all the people that had seen the house, but it’s a lot of fun to talk about,” she said. “People are really amazed by the before and after. It’s fun to see the look on everyone’s face when they see the pool.”

I really like a lot of the finishes in this house, such as the walls, stained beams and old-looking floors. Did you notice the ceiling in the wine room?

More Thanksgiving Tables

I'm thinking about Christmas -- decorating, presents, foods, etc. -- but I just can't blog about it yet. Shoot, I haven't even decided how to decorate my Thanksgiving table or fully planned out the menu. I have, however, found a few more fun centerpiece ideas.

Fredericksburg Living

The other day I posted photos of an historic home for sale in Fredericksburg, TX. Fredericksburg is a popular Hill Country retreat for people seeking solace, antiques and a little German flavor. Many people from urban areas like Houston, Austin, and Dallas purchase weekend homes in Fredericksburg, as there are home decor stores, antique shops and interesting historic sites.

This 19th century home was purchased by a Houston couple. All pics are from CountryLiving.com.

You can tell by the photos that the couple opted to leave the home in much of its original state. That's pretty common in Fredericksburg. Fredericksburg designer Carol Hicks Bolton has a style that's all about vintage, antique and tea-stained fabrics and finishes. Her brother-in-law is a decorative painter, who's known for his antique paint finishes. Here's a small sample he did for Home Companion.

As much as I love vignettes, I'm more of a big picture gal, and I really would have loved to see room views of this interesting Fredericksburg home. What about you?

Home of the Week -- Fredericksburg

This week's home of the week is not a big, multi-million dollar home in Austin. Instead, it's an old, limestone home in the charming town of Fredericksburg, in the Texas Hill Country.

This historical home was built in 1891 by Alfred Vaner Stucken as a one-story limestone home just a block off Main Street. When the family grew, a second story was added using a molded concrete block which looks like a rough-hewn stone and is similar in size to the original limestone. Today the home provides all the modern features, as well as all the charm from the past.

Notice the traditional features like transoms, beadboard ceilings, wood floors, and the solid rock walls. The master suite occupies the entire second floor and not only has a his/hers salons, but also a morning and afternoon veranda to take in the views of the town. You will also find the same front and back porches on the first level.

Behind the main home is a guest cottage converted from the old tank house (the windmill still stands which used to supply water to the storage tank which has long been removed) of days gone by plus a modern addition with long leaf pine walls and ceiling which provide the setting taking you back in time.

The home was completely remodeled in 2004 and is admired by the many tourists which pass by on a daily basis.

Can't you just see it decorated by Carol Bolton or Debbie at Curious Sofa? There was no specific price listed on the mls site, but my guess is it isn't cheap. Could you live here?

We're Invited to a Party!

My blogger friend, Chris, over at Just A Girl, is hosting an early holiday party. With today's economy, maybe you're thinking about scaling back your Christmas gifts a bit this year. What better way to do that than to make gifts for friends, relatives, teachers, etc.? The point of Chris' party, is for participants to come up with ideas of things everyone can make.

I'm bringing homemade soap to the party. I've made variations of it before to give to my kids' teachers, as well as to friends (mine and theirs). Not only is the soap neat, but you can get creative with the wrapping, which makes the gift that much more special. Homemade soaps also make great party favors.

Lavender Beeswax Soap
Ingredients
4 ounces (114 grams) glycerin soap base (available in craft stores, organic foods stores and some pharmacies)
10 drops lavender essential oil
1 drop violet coloring
1 teaspoon beeswax

Instructions
Melt glycerin over low heat in a double boiler or microwave. Add beeswax and remove from heat. Stir until wax is melted. Add essential oil and color. Stir and pour into mold.

The trick to great glycerin, melt and pour soaps is to keep the heat as low as possible. Too much heat will cause a mushy or beaded appearance after a very short storage time. Keep glycerin soaps sealed in plastic to keep the glycerin from attracting moisture from the air.

Lavender and Rosemary Soap
Ingredients
3 cups glycerin soap base
1/4 cup infusion of lavender flowers and rosemary leaves
1 1/2 teaspoons of lavender oil
1 1/2 teaspoons of rosemary oil
1 teaspoon pulverized dried rosemary
Soap mold (available at any craft store)

Instructions
Melt soap base and add other ingredients. Stir until blended, then pour into molds. Infusion basically means to make tea. Pour hot water over fresh or dried plant parts. Three tablespoons of herb per cup of water for ten minutes should do fine. Use distilled water, if possible. Pour into mold and let set.

Things You’ll Need:
Soap Coloring
Soap Fragrance
Soap Molds
Glycerin Soaps
Double Boilers Or Saucepan
Ice Cube Trays Or Molds
Oven Mitts
Tongs
Oven Mitts
Heavy-duty Plastic Bags
Utility Knives
Oven mitts
small, plastic toys

1) Arrange toys in ice cube trays or other molds.
2) Slice the soap into small pieces.
3) Put soap pieces into a heavy-duty plastic bag and seal it.
4) Boil water in a saucepan.
5) Put the plastic bag into the boiling water until the soap melts.
6) Pour the melted soap over the toys in the molds.
7) Allow the soap to cool and harden before removing it from the molds.

Happy Saturday and an Award

One of the greatest things about blogging is meeting all sorts of wonderful people that one would never meet otherwise. One of my newest blog friends is Mindy over at Primitiques 'n Poetry. Now when I first went over to her blog, I was looking for the poetry, but Poetry is the little town where Mindy lives and has her neat antique shop called Primitiques. We should all be so lucky to live in a town with a great name like Poetry. Heck, I'm still trying to get my parents to pronounce Buda properly and not like the naked, fat guy with the big belly! LOL (In case you're wondering, it's BYOO duh).

Mindy has passed along a fun Kreativ Blogger award. As part of this award, I have been asked to share with you 6 things that make me happy.
1. My husband. We can spend hours and hours just hanging out, usually sitting on the front porch of our Hill Country home. He makes a mean Bloody Mary, and we play lots of gin.
2. My son. My son is a senior in high school this year, and though he's staying close to home for his first year of college next year, I'm selfishly happy about that. No one has a better sense of humor than that kid. He has a very sharp and intellectual wit that not just anyone gets. I love that about him.
3. My daughter. It's hard to believe she's 13. She is a triple threat in voice, dance and acting and has aspirations of performing on Broadway. If anyone can do it, that girl can.
4. Trapp orange vanilla candles. I have loved these things for the last several years now and though there are other great candles and fragances out there, none excites me like Trapp orange vanilla.
5. Bath and Body Works body cream. You can usually get one free body cream when you buy three at regular price. I keep one in my car, one in my desk at the office and the other two on standby at home. This stuff is way better for hands than regular lotion, and the fragrances are always so yummy! One large tube lasts a long time, too.
6. Entertaining. As one of five kids, my parents didn't entertain much, but I love having people over. For dinner, drinks & appetizers, dessert and coffee or overnight, it's just fun to hang out with friends and family.

Now I get to pass along the Kreativ Blogger award to six other bloggers. I like Mindy's idea of passing it to bloggers who haven't been on her radar very long, so I'm going to do the same. All of the blogs below are pretty new to me and definitely worth getting to know better.
1) Making This Home Katie at Making This Home is an American living in Berlin, Germany. I have had so much fun getting to know her through her blog and following the remodeling endeavors of her small but oh-so-cute apartment.
2) Eddie Ross of Top Design fame. I know he didn't make it to the Top Design finals, but Eddie is a great designer with a really fun blog. One of the things I appreciate about Eddie is even though he has a bit of celebrity and even works for Martha herself, he always responds with a sweet note after I leave a comment on his blog.
3) Do you need holiday decorating ideas? Then don't miss Robin's blog, The Robin's Nest. Not only does she have great ideas, but she'll let you know what items you'll need and then gives step by step instructions on her projects.
4) Desiree at Lookiloos has a fun blog that's new to me. For great decorating ideas or to peek into high-end homes, you'll spend lots and lots of time on her blog.
5) Do you like beachy cottage style? Then Completely Coastal is the blog for you. Maya stopped by a few posts ago, and I'm so glad she did. Lots and lots of great eye candy on her blog.
6) Finally, this creative blogger really deserves a Kreativ award. Pennie at Ladies Blend Thymes has great recipes, decorating ideas and jewelry.

Lip Smackin' Good

Are you a dollar store fanatic? There's not a dollar store close to my house or my office, so I don't get there very often. When I do, though, I find myself browsing every aisle. I made a trip to the dollar store a week ago and was as giddy as a school girl when I saw all the new, exciting flavors of lip balm.

I can eat Good & Plenty candy by the bushel, as long as the licorice is soft, so I was tickled to see Good & Plenty lip gloss. Not only does it smell like Good & Plenty, but it tastes like it, too. And calorie free!

Maybe you're not a licorice person. Don't worry. Surely there's a flavor to suit your fancy.

If you're like me and slather on lip gloss like it's going out of style, and if you have a bit of a sweet tooth but would rather forego the calories, you must check out the lip balms at your local Dollar Tree. I promise you'll see a flavor you like.

Hosting Thanksgiving

I know it's a few weeks early, but I'm hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year, and as a professional fundraiser/special event planner, I have to plan these things out. I'm already thinking about the menu, table settings and decor. What about you?

I found a few pics on the web, though so far, nothing really appeals to me. The number of guests we'll be hosting is still up in the air. It could be as few as 7, with all seated at our main, kitchen table, or it could be as many as 19, which could include a kids' table.

I've always wanted to do a burlap table cloth or runner, so that's a given. I'll probably do some sort of pumpkin/squash centerpiece. Other than that, I don't really have any preferences, except that I want something low-key and natural. Do you have your Thanksgiving decorations in mind yet?

Home of the Week -- Westlake Beauty

This grand home sits in a highly sought-after area of Austin called Westlake. The mls listing has this to say about the estate, Unique Tuscan style villa with custom finishes and elegance & charm at every turn. Private guest house, theater room, pool, spa. Handmade hardware, mahogany doors & windows. 7-step plaster inside & outside. Views of Lake Austin and downtown.

At just under 14,000 square feet, the estate has six bedrooms and seven baths. Like the Balcones Woods home, the homeowners entertain frequently.

After a bit of research, I found out this home is owned by a former Dell executive (not Michael Dell's brother) and has a list price of $9 million. Can you imagine paying the annual taxes of over $100,000?

Just a little update about the Balcones Woods home... It is listed at $10 million and remember that storage room? Apparently, it's 1300 square feet all by itself. I also found out who owns it, but I won't share that news on my blog. Unless you live in Austin, you probably won't know who it is, anyway.

Have you ever read that poem before? I remember reading it as a high-schooler and then singing it (yes, believe it or not, there's a song), in high school choir. Even though so many words are gibberish, the way it's written seems to make perfect sense, doesn't it?

I posted the classic poem, because as I come across all those silly verification words on other people's blogs, well I am reminded of Jabberwocky. In fact, if I took the time, I could probably come up with my own poem using some of the silly words I've encountered:

Hard to believe, but this is my 90th post. Do you know what that means? I'm 10 posts away from the 100 mark. If you know me, either through the blog or in real life, you know that I love an excuse for a party, so let's celebrate, shall we?

The Best Potato Soup Ever

I may have mentioned before that I have a theory about good cooks versus great cooks. Good cooks follow recipes. Great cooks don't even need recipes, and everything they come up with always manages to be fabulous. My mother-in-law was a great cook.

One of her specialties was potato soup. She had no real recipe for her potato soup, yet it always tasted the same. Because she used leftover mashed potatoes, the consistency was smooth and thick, and the flavor was, well, just yummy. My family never has enough leftover mashed potatoes to make anything out of, so when I discovered frozen mashed potatoes, I figured they might work to make Dorothy's potato soup. There's no "real" recipe, but I'll share as much as I can.

My family of four loves this soup, so I tend to make a lot. Feel free to adjust up or down, depending on the crew you're feeding.

-- Three packages frozen mashed potatoes (They come loaded up with goodies or with a little butter. I prefer the more embellished ones). I thaw these out before cooking with them, and they thaw out well in the fridge.

Put the potatoes in a dutch oven and then pour in milk in roughly the same proportion as potatoes. Cook over low-medium heat and stir often.

Once the mixture starts heating up, add cheese. I use Mexican Velveeta and a little pepper jack, but any cheese will do. Add as much or as little as you like.

If you use potatoes without all the extras, you can add those yourself. A little cooked bacon, chives, onions, etc. -- all are good in this soup. If your kids need more vegatables, they'd never know if you throw in a few grated carrots. You can even sautee some chopped jalapeno pepper and add to the mix. I prefer to add salt at the table, since many pre-packaged foods are loaded with extra sodium.

If you care to garnish, add a few chives, crumbled bacon and a little cheddar cheese. Bon appetit!

The Best Game Ever

It's hard enough to be a red-stater in Austin, but to be a Red Raider in Longhorn country, well, that's near sacrilege as far as most Austinites are concerned. Plus, when the University of Texas Longhorns are #1 in the country and the big game's on primetime, network TV, Red Raider fans living in the Austin area don't dare venture out to root on their team in public. Tonight was. That. Game.

Texas Tech fans tend to be a bit on the obnoxious side. I think it's because we're so used to losing in the clutch, and when we do win, we just don't know how to do it graciously. We didn't have to worry about that tonight, although it was close. Too close.

i am about as girly girl as a girl can get, but I have to say, I love football. I spent many a Saturday and Sunday afternoon as a young girl catching passes from Lane, the tomboy across the street. She insisted on being the quarterback (Roger Staubach), so I didn't have a choice but to be receiver. Even before Lane, I learned to throw a perfect spiral from my dad, who'd lob passes back and forth with my twin brothers and me.

I was at Tech in the early to mid-80's, and we didn't have the best team back then. We were loyal fans, nonetheless, and now that Tech is doing so well, Tech fans are positively giddy.

So now Texas Tech needs to gear up for a formidable Oklahoma State team to continue our best season ever. Just for tonight, though, we'll relish in our win over the #1 Longhorns tonight -- the best game ever.
